These smoked salmon sandwiches are a simple yet elegant combination of silky smoked salmon, creamy whipped cream cheese, and fresh herbs layered between soft sandwich bread. Inspired by classic afternoon tea sandwiches, they're light, flavorful, and incredibly easy to assemble in just a few minutes. Whether served for brunch, lunch, or a tea party spread, these delicate sandwiches feel special while using just a handful of ingredients.

Creamy, herby, and packed with silky smoked salmon.

Growing up my mom and aunties would sometimes host an Afternoon Tea party. Then as I started working in a British Pub we would host Afternoon Teas, and one of my favorite things to do visiting new cities is to find a delicious high tea. There is something about numerous dainty sandwiches, lots of treats, and copious amounts of clotted cream with fresh scones that makes me incredibly happy. Don't miss my how to host an afternoon tea guide.

A smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich is a classic afternoon tea sandwich, I always hope to find when I go to high tea. Luckily, making one at home is incredibly easy as well. Perfect for a brunch.

    Flavor Builders in This Sandwich

Since this is a simple sandwich using quality ingredients is key to making the best-smoked salmon sandwich.

    • Smoked salmon: The star ingredient, bringing rich, delicate seafood flavor that pairs beautifully with creamy spreads.
    • Whipped cream cheese: Light and airy, making it easy to spread while adding creamy tang.
    • Fresh herbs (chives and parsley): Add freshness and a subtle oniony brightness that balances the richness of the salmon.
    • Soft sandwich bread: Traditional tea sandwiches use soft white bread or rye so the delicate filling shines.

Fresh lemon juice is a great way to give the sandwich a bright, citrus flavor.

    Variations

If you want to "beef" up your sandwich adding beefsteak tomato slices, red onion slices, fresh avocado, or cucumber slices would be scrumptious!

Sometimes we make smoked salmon appetizers- same concept but use a slice of toast and serve it open-faced. If you like capers they would be a great topping too!

    Let's Build These Tea Sandwiches

two slices of white sandwich bread on a white plate on a white marble surface with a pink linen
Make sure your bread is fresh and soft!
cream cheese spread on white bread with smoked salmon on one half
Spread a thick layer of cream cheese then add smoked salmon.

    Remove the crusts.
    sandwich cut into four triangles
Cut two diagonals to make triangles.

    Making Ahead

These are best served right away. If you want to make them ahead of time then I suggest storing them in the fridge with a damp paper towel or damp lightweight tea towel or cheesecloth covering them to help prevent the bread from drying out.

These smoked salmon sandwiches are a classic choice for afternoon tea. Pair them with cucumber sandwiches, Curried chicken salad, and carrot cheddar sandwiches for a beautiful tea tray.

    • Total Time: 5 minutes
    • Yield: 1 Sandwich 1x

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 2 Slices White Sandwich Bread or Rye Sandwich Bread
    • 1oz-2oz Whipped Cream Cheese,
    • 2-3 Slices Smoked Salmon- I like Scottish
    • Fresh Chives, finely chopped
    • Fresh Parsley, finely chopped
    • Salt and Black Pepper

    Instructions

    1. Take two slices of white bread and spread them both with cream cheese. I like to use whipped cream cheese but you can use block cream cheese that has been softened.
    2. Layer the smoked salmon as thick as you like, I prefer 2-3 slices and sprinkle on salt and pepper then add chopped herbs. Use a serrated knife to cut the crusts off and slice the sandwich into three rectangles or slice the sandwich in a diagonal both ways to create 4 triangles. Serve immediately.
    3. If preparing ahead of time place on a sheet pan and place a damp light tea towel or cheesecloth or paper towel on top of keeping the sandwiches from drying out.

HI looks great but really need measurements in grams. Nobody outside the US uses ounces and it isn't easy to keep jumping back and forth for conversions. I find myself moving on to other recipes that do have it which is a shame.

Hi Kim, thanks for letting me know. You can use about 28-56 grams of cream cheese or a couple tablespoons. Hope that helps! Merry Christmas. XX Liz

How lazy can you get Kim? I am African of Asian roots and brought up in the west. I constantly have to make conversions. Miles, kms, pounds, kilos, ounces, stones etc...

What about the British & Irish measuring body weight in stones. I mean how archaic is that?? No one else does that.

If you feel the need to move on simply because you can't be bothered to convert a measurement, I dread to think how lazy you must be in the kitchen.

Elizabeth, nice recipe. I like to add a bit of horseradish paste to the cream cheese as it goes so well with smoked fish, and thinly sliced cucumber for the flavour and crunch. It elevates the recipe and creates a delicious sandwich as a snack or an afternoon tea.
