Thai iced tea is a delectable drink made from black tea, spices, and sweetened condensed milk. This easy recipe for Thai iced tea from scratch will be your new favorite afternoon treat!

glass of thai iced tea on a white counter

About 5 years ago I was with my friend at her dad's Chinese restaurant, she usually just ordered for us all because she knew what was best. She told me she was ordering me an iced tea, I said no it's okay I don't like iced tea, she said you'll like this one, trust me.

She was right. It was a Thai Iced Tea. I think I really fell in love with it because of the sweetened condensed milk. Who doesn't love drinking that glorious liquid gold? I sure do.

Today I am partnering with one of my favorite brands Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk- they have been a brand that I grew up with and have always loved to make recipes with their products! Have you seen the squeezable bottle, it's so much cleaner and easier to use than the can for recipes like this where you just need a little bit of sweetened condensed milk.

Sweetened condensed milk is an ingredient you see on numerous recipes on my site from caramel to cheesecakes to this Thai Iced Tea.

    Let's get to the recipe.

What is Thai iced tea made of?

There is a Thai tea mix you can buy and use to make the tea part or you can make it from black tea and some spices. If you make it from scratch, as I do in this recipe, you will not have the orange tint, but it will still taste fantastic!! You’ll need:

    • Black tea bags
    • Filtered Water
    • Whole Cloves
    • Cinnamon Stick
    • Cardamom ( I used ground but a cardamom pod would be preferred)
    • Star Anise is often used
    • Pure Vanilla Extract
    • Eagle Brand® Squeeze Sweetened Condensed Milk

How do you make Thai Iced Tea?

In a large pot add the water, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, and cardamom. Let it come to a boil then turn off the heat and add the black tea bags and vanilla extract. Place a lid on top of the pot and let all the flavors steep for 30 minutes or up to two hours.

Strain the tea through a sieve into a clean container and let it chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

When ready to serve to fill a tall glass with ice and pour the chilled tea up to ⅔rds of the glass. Squeeze in Eagle Brand® Squeeze Sweetened Condensed Milk, depending on how sweet you like I suggest starting with 1oz/ 2 Tablespoons. Find the product here!

When you use Eagle Brand® squeeze sweetened condensed milk, you just flip open the lid, squeeze out the amount you need and chill the rest for later. What could be sweeter?

I like to give it a good mix so the drink is evenly sweet. Now try not to slurp it up too quickly!! Sugar rush! Not speaking from experience 😉

Can you make Thai Iced Tea ahead of time?

Totally I have made the tea a day or two ahead of time and kept it stored in an air-tight container in the fridge. I would not add the sweetened condensed milk until ready to serve though- making the squeezable bottle a perfect find!
