better than sex cake slice on a white plate with a fork taking a bite

One of the most notorious and epic chocolate cakes this Better than Sex Cake never disappoints. An easy chocolate cake mix is doctored up, filled with sweetened condensed milk and caramel, topped with Heath bar and fresh whipped cream you will love this cake!! Easily made the day before this cake is always the first to go!

fork taking a bite of better than sex cake on a white plate

This delicious cake is one of the best tasting, I mean hello the name?! Traditionally this cake is made with a boxed cake mix, cool whip, sweetened condensed milk, caramel topping, heath bars, and toffee bits. I personally am not a fan of cool whip nor do I ever have any on hand- I do always have heavy whipping cream in the fridge, and I much prefer that.

The key to this cake is poking holes for the sweetened condensed milk and caramel to soak into. To create the perfect holes I find using the bottom of the handle of a wooden spoon to be the easiest, you also want to make sure not to poke through all the way to the bottom.

Then you let the cake cool completely before putting the whipped topping on, cool whip or fresh whipped cream.

Another delicious cake with a great name is this Crack Cake Recipe, its made with wine!! So delicious! Or try my Butterfinger Cake Recipe.

    Ingredients

There are three components to this cake; the cake, filling, topping.

For the cake you will need:

    • Devils Food Chocolate Cake Mix
    • Large Eggs, at room temp.
    • Milk
    • Vegetable Oil
    • Sour Cream

    For the filling:

    • Caramel (homemade or store-bought- lots of people use the caramel ice cream topping)
    • Sweetened Condensed Milk

    For the topping:

    • Heavy Whipping Cream
    • Powdered Sugar
    • Dry Milk Powder
    • Heath Bars / Toffee Bars
    • Extra Caramel for drizzling if desired

    Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F/180C and heavily grease a 9X13 baking dish and set aside.

In a large bowl mix together all of the cake ingredients, mix just until combined, making sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl so no flour streaks remain.

Pour the cake batter into the prepared dish and bake for 28-33 minutes, or until the cake is done.

You can check if it's done by lightly pressing the top center of the sponge, if it springs back it's done, or use a toothpick inserted in the center to check for the wet batter.

What do you fill better than sex cake with?

As soon as the cake is out of the oven use the bottom of a wooden spoon to poke holes into the cake.

In a large bowl mix together the caramel and sweetened condensed milk. Evenly pour caramel mixture over the cake to the holes.

What do you top better than sex cake with?

In a large bowl with a handheld electric mixer or the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and dry milk powder until medium-stiff peaks form.

Using an offset spatula spread whipped cream over the chilled cake.

Sprinkle chunks on top of whipped cream and if desired drizzle more caramel on top.

Cover the cake with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator. The cake is good for up to 3 days.

Can you make better than sex cake ahead of time?

Yes, the cake actually tastes better if it has time to soak in the caramel and sweetened condensed milk.

I would avoid making this cake more than 2 days in advance though.

This is the perfect combination of deliciousness!!! People underestimate box mixes. They are merely pre-measured dry ingredients. Thanks so much for sharing this.

I LOVE IT!!! Everyone in my family loves it! Though it is pretty sweet- YUMMY SWEET... Even my non-sweets & non-cake eating family members (not just my immediate household) fell in love with it ahhhh it’s sooo good!! I’ve read other recipes that call for frozen whip this one is PERFECT! These ingredients, including the heath bars are now part of my regular shopping list., easy to whip together and very often craved

I made a mashup of this marvel and the Chocolate Salted Caramel layer cake and it is the best cake I’ve ever made, by far. Also used vegan eggs, Nondairy alternatives for the milk and coconut whipped cream and nobody noticed or certainly complained. Amazingly delicious and relatively simple! Thank you!

Does anyone know if this cake can be stacked into tiers or if it’s to moist.

Hi Allison, I do not suggest stacking this it is far too heavy from all of the liquid. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if you try the recipe I would love to know what you think! XX Liz

What cake mix did you use? And did the cake mix call for the sour cream or did you just add that in with the rest of the box mix ingredients?

I usually use Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines 🙂 And I don't use the ingredients on the back of the box just the ingredients listed in the recipe card under Chocolate Cake. Please let me know if you try the recipe what you think! I Would love to know what you think! XX Liz
