seven layer dip recipe in a glass container

Seven Layer Dip is a classic dip perfect for your next party or your next excuse to finish off the bag of chips! Made with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand, this dip is full of flavor and beauty. Make sure to use a glass dish to see the beautiful layers of dip you make!

Does anyone else feel that a good dip is addicting? My favorite creamy dip is my homemade french onion dip. Sure the packets are great but adding in some caramelized onions really takes it to the next level. I was craving more dip, as you do and this seven layer dip was born.

Recently I made this dip for a party and it went down like a number one hit! My corn, tomato, cucumber salad is also a popular party request!!

What are the 7 layers of 7 Layer Dip?

Of course, your basics of a seven layer dip recipe are here beans, creamy layer (usually sour cream), guacamole, salsa or pico de gallo, cheese, chives and instead of olives, I added some radishes and chopped tomatoes.  By all means, add some black olives, they just aren't my jam.

I like to use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, it creates a lighter layer. And for the beans, I use black beans mashed with some spices. The spices give it so much more flavor than boring old refried beans. So between the Greek yogurt and black beans, basically this dip is health food.

How do you make Seven Layer Dip?

First start with a can of black beans, drained and added to a bowl. Add in the spices then using a potato masher or a fork mash the beans until they are combined into more of a thick paste. Place the beans in the bottom of your dish, I use a clear square 8X8 so you could see the pretty layers.

Then we move on to the guacamole layer. You could make it really easy on yourself and grab a container of premade guac. I didn't want to run to the store so I used 2 avocados cut into chunks, about two oz of cut up red onion and some spices. Mash together then spread evenly on top of the beans.

Sour cream is usually the next layer but seeing as I can't control my chocolate intake I figured I would try and make a healthy swap with Greek yogurt- the great thing is you can't tell the difference. And you know earlier I told you about my love for onion dip? Well, I mixed in some of Trader Joe's Onion Salt in with the yogurt, amazing. But totally not necessary.

Next comes the salsa/ pico de gallo- if using salsa I like to drain most of the juices. Then sprinkle on your toppings cheese, of course, olives if you want or I like more chopped tomatoes, sliced radishes, and chives.

How long does Bean Dip stay good?

This dip is great to make a day in advance, I would opt in placing the cheese, chives, and radishes on the day you are serving. The cheese can just get wet and a bit soggy if it sits next to the wet salsa/pico for too long. But ultimately it doesn't go too soggy, the longest the dip lastest around my house is 2 days, but I bet it would be good for up to 3.
